Chandigarh, December 4, 2019:The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has accused the Capt Amarinder Singh and the Narendra Modi-led government at the centre, of playing a cruel joke on the poor people of the state living in ‘kutcha’ houses. The interests of the people of the state had been deliberately overlooked in terms of providing them housing at cheaper rates. The latest reports available confirmed that only 13% of the poor people in Punjab had been given houses under the Prime Minister’s Gramin Awas Yojana, while more than two lakh poor families living in ‘kutcha’ houses were denied the housing benefits.

Manjit Singh Bilaspur, state president of the party’s Scheduled Caste Wing and MLA, and Kulwant Singh Pandori, vice-president and MLA, said that 70 per cent of the families belonging to weaker sections came from the Dalits and 30 per cent from the other categories living in ‘kutcha’ house, alleging that they were deprived of the scheme benefits owing to the anti-Dalit stance of the . state and union governments at the Centre.

The AAP MLAs said that the government exchequer was always empty when it came to giving the poor their due, while on the other hand, the Captain Government was indulging in playing ducks and drakes to appoint advisors and buying helicopters for personal use.

Bilaspur said that if Kerala government could get 61 per cent of the benefit out of the housing scheme, why the Punjab Government had failed to get the benefit for the poor in the state? The AAP MLAs have sought clarification from Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh, Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal and former minister Som Prakash for the dismal performance of the government in this regard.
