All India Inter-University Qwan-ki-Do Championship 2019 kicks off at Chandigarh University Gharuan
Chandigarh, December 27, 2019 – All India Inter-University Qwan-Ki-Do (Men/Women) Championship 2019 kicked off today at the campus of Chandigarh University, Gharuan. About 600 players of 30 University teams from all over India are taking part in the four day Inter-University Championship which is being organized by Association of Indian Universities (AIU). Vice-Chancellor, Chandigarh University, Dr.R.S.Bawa along with Competition Director, Ashok Kumar inaugurated the All India Inter-University Qwan-Ki-Do (Men/Women) Championship 2019.
On the opening day, matches were played in the under-59 kg weight category in the women’s championship in which players of 6 Universities took part. In the opening match, Komaljit of host team Chandigarh University, Gharuan beat Kajal of Punjabi University, Patiala while in the other match Mamta of Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak beat Bhawani of Osmania University, Hyderabad. The first semi-final match in the under-59 kg weight category was played between Komaljit, Chandigarh University and Kalsom from Guru Kashi University, Bathinda. Komaljit easily beat Kalsom in the three round match to book her place in the finals, while in the other semi-final match Mamta of MDU, Rohtak beat Shalini of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University, Ayodhya. In the final match, Mamta of MDU Rohtak beat Komaljit of CU Gharuan in a tough fight to win the first gold medal in the tournament while Komaljit had to satisfy with silver. Shalini of Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Avadh University, Ayodhya and Kalsom of Guru Kashi University, Bathinda were awarded bronze medal on the basis of the total scores in the matches they played.
In the men’s tournament, matches were played in the under-65 kg weight category in which players of 8 universities took part on the first day of the tournament. Nasim Ahmed of Guru Kashi University, Bathinda beat Sumit Kumar of University of Jammu in the opening match while Kartik of host team Chandigarh University, Gharuan beat Sourabh Singh of Veer Bahadur Singh Purvanchal University, UP. In the third match, player Arvind of GNDU Amritsar beat Akash of KUVEMPU University, Karnataka while Sumit Kumar of MDU Rohtak beat Khem Singh of Punjabi University, Patiala. In the first semifinal match, Nasim Ahmed of GKU, Bathinda beat Kartik of Chandigarh University to enter the finals of the tournament while in the second semifinal match, Sumit Kumar of MDU Rohtak beat Arvind of GNDU Amritsar.
Finally Sumit Kumar of MDU Rohtak bagged gold medal by beating Nasim Ahmed, GKU Bathinda who had to satisfy with silver medal. Both Arvind of GNDU Amritsar and Kartik of CU Gharuan were awarded bronze medals on the basis of the total scores in their respective matches.
