Chandigarh, July 28, 2020 : Dr. S. Anantha Ramakrishna, Professor, Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur has joined as Director CSIR-CSIO, Chandigarh on 27th July 2020. Besides being awarded the Bhatnagar award he also has also been awarded the Swarnajayanti Fellowship, INSA Young Scientist Medal and Homi Bhabha Prize. Known for his specialization in Optics and Condensed Matter Physics, he has also made fundamental contributions in the field of metamaterials, and in developing new forms of anisotropic photonic materials. He has also held the post of adjunct Faculty, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Mohali, Visiting Professor, Nanophotonics and Metrology group, Ecole Polytechnique Federale Lausanne, Switzerland and Invited Professor, Institut Fresnel, Universite Aix Marseille-I, France.
Prof. Ramakrishna said that it will be his privilege to lead Central Scientific Instruments Organisation (CSIO) which is a premier national laboratory dedicated to research, design and development of scientific and industrial instruments to new heights. He said that CSIO is a multi-disciplinary and multi-dimensional apex industrial research & development organisation in the country and is poised to stimulate growth of the Instrument Industry in India covering a wide range of applications. He said that he was proud of the achievements of CSIO and he knew that CSIO has well equipped laboratories manned by highly qualified and well trained staff with infrastructural facilities in the areas of Agrionics; Medical Instrumentation and Prosthetic Devices; Optics and Cockpit based Instrumentation; Fiber/Laser Optics based Sensors & Instrumentation; Analytical Instrumentation; Advanced Materials based Transducers etc. Large numbers of instruments ranging from simple ones for society at large to highly sophisticated ones for defence forces have been developed.
He said that CSIO is working in close partnership with major Industries, PSUs, MSMEs and other departments and ministries at the time of the crisis of COVID- 19 pandemic in the country. It has come up with several innovative solutions like Disinfecting Chambers, Face Shields, Electrostatic Sprayers, Contactless Thermometers, Precision safety goggles etc. to help the frontline warriors of corona. He said that he will try to strengthen the existing capabilities of CSIO and also strive to position CSIO so that it can further serve the country in new forthcoming challenges.
