PPCB INITIATES DRIVE TO PROMOTE USE OF COMPOSTABLE CARRY BAGS UNDER ‘TANDARUST PUNJAB’ MISSION

Jalandhar, June 13, 2018 ( By Madhur Vyas): As a part of the ‘Tandarust Punjab’ mission, the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) initiated a drive to encourage the management of shopping malls and people for using Compostable Carry bags (Approved by Central Pollution Control Board).

A team of the PPCB led by Assistant Environmental Engineer (AEE) Sandeep Kumar and Satyajeet Singh Attri two prominent shopping malls in the city viz. M/s Big Bazar at Civil Lines and M/s D-Mart at Guru Nanak Mission Chowk, Jalandhar for pursuing these units to use Compostable Carry bags. The team apprised the management and the staff that these environment-friendly bags could be instrumental for eliminating the environmental problem being created by plastic bags. They said that the need of the hour was to ensure that only these bags were used by people so that hazard caused to the environment through the use of plastics could be checked.

The team apprised the management and staff of the malls these bio-friendly bags do not cause any harm to the environment or the human health adding that these bags decay easily in the soil as compared to the plastic bags. They said that these bags were made of the potato and maize starch due to which they were durable and less hazardous. During the visit, the mall management asserted that they have already started using the compostable carry bags for food items and were using woven bags for carrying other items.  They also agreed to utilize Compostable carry bags both for the food items as well as for grocery items in the future.
