Amritsar December 11, 2019 ( By SK.Vyas) : “Lauding the “Swacchh Bharat” campaign of the Govt of India, Prof Jaspal Singh Sandhu, Vice –Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev Univesity remarked that it has definitely gone a long way in sensitising the messes towards the dire need of maintaining the environment neat, clean & green.” Prof Sandhu was delivering the inaugural address as chief guest in the inaugural session of Two week long Refresher Course in Environmental Sciences (ID) at the UGC-HRDC of the university. This is an Interdisciplinary Refresher course and 35 University and College teachers pertaining to diverse disciplines are participating in it.
Expressing his deep concern over the burning issue like pollution, depletion of ozone layer, smog etc, he strongly urged the society to wake up from the deep slumber before it becomes too late. Briefing them about the steps taken by the university to improve Air Quality Index in the campus, he asserted that the drastic measures like limited entry of four-wheelers, upkeep of the campus with the plantation, beautified landscape etc in the last few years have contributed a lot in improving & maintaining the campus neat, clean & green. The outcome of all these endeavours resulted in winning the Second Cleanest Campus Award amongst the all state universities of the country, he concluded.
Prof Renu Bhardwaj, Dean Faculty of Life Sciences, Deptt of Botanical & Environmental Sciences, Director IQAC, & the coordinator apprised the participants with the thrust area of the course. Labelling the environmental degradation as a “global Challenge”, she opined that the endeavours at the global level are the need of the hour in order to preserve it for the posterity.
Prof Adarsh Pal Vig, Director, of the centre expressed his profound pleasure over the allocation of a huge multi-storey complex to the centre & thanked the competent authorities. Exhorting the participants to adopt “positivity”, he opined that only then the multifarious challenges in various domains of personal, professional, social, academic life can be handled efficiently.
Dr. M. S. Bhatti, Head, Deptt. of Botanical & Environmental sciences proposed the vote of thanks & assured the whole-hearted cooperation of the Department. Prof Avinash Kaur Nagpal, Dr Satwinderjit Kaur, Dr Jatinder Kaur, Dr Rajinder Kaur also graced the occasion. Earlier the chief guest was presented a sapling. Jute bags were distributed by the Chief Guest to all the participants. During this course, the participants will be enlightened on the multiplicity of issues regarding the environmental degradation & the measures, which need to be taken to stem this rot. Formal as well as informal interactions with the renowned academicians, field visits, seminars, workshops etc are part of their curriculum.
