· FARMERS COULD OPT FOR ENHANCING SHELF LIFE OF THEIR PRODUCE BY STORING IT
Kartarpur (Jalandhar), January 23: In a path-breaking initiative aimed at giving a major reprieve to the vegetable cultivators of the region, the Punjab government has constructed an ultra-modern Vegetable Cold Storage at the Centre of Excellence for Vegetables (Indo-Israel) for maximizing profit of farmers by enhancing the shelf life of vegetables.
The cold storage having a capacity of 2.5 metric tons could be used by the small and marginal farmers to store their vegetables at an affordable cost. The cold storage was equipped with ultra-modern techniques and was aimed at giving a reprieve to the farmers so that they could store their vegetables and sell them later as the demand of the vegetable in the market. This would enable the farmers to get the remunerative price of their products rather than selling it throwaway prices.
Divulging more details, Deputy Director Horticulture Dr. Ranjit Singh and Project Officer Centre of Excellence Dr. Daljit Singh said that the trial run of this cold storage has already been done and it would be dedicated to the farmers very soon in the coming days. They said that the basic purpose was to facilitate the farmers in getting remunerative prices of their produce by storing it during the period of less demand. They said that there was no such facility available to the vegetable cultivators due to which sometimes the farmers had to sell their produce at throwaway prices. However, they said that now the farmers could use this facility to store their perishable produce for a longer period.
Lauding the efforts being made by the Centre for safeguarding the interests of the farmers, the Deputy Commissioner Jalandhar Varinder Kumar Sharma said that said that this Centre ofExcellence was playing a vanguard role in ensuring the prosperity of farmers of the state and particularly of the region. He said that the ultra modern techniques used in this centre acquaint the farmers with the global technology being used in the field of agriculture so as to update their expertise for making sure that they reap maximum profits from diversification of agriculture. Sharma further said that the latest know-how in this institution being run with the collaboration of Israel gives valuable information to farmers especially about maximizing their profit from produce.
